Honoring Women Who Paved the Way

Black women have long been at the forefront of sexual health, education, and empowerment, despite societal stigmas and challenges. From advocating for comprehensive sex education to creating spaces where pleasure and intimacy are normalized, these pioneers have shaped the way we understand sexual wellness today.

Spotlight: Kandi Burruss – Businesswoman, Advocate & Pleasure Pioneer

Kandi Burruss, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, entrepreneur, and founder of Bedroom Kandi, has redefined the way Black women embrace and talk about pleasure. Through her award-winning Bedroom Kandi brand, she has not only normalized intimate wellness but also created an opportunity for women—especially Black women—to take ownership of their pleasure, sexuality, and financial independence. I have the honor of partnering with Kandi to bring BK to the community, and her passion for empowering women is unmatched. Her influence extends beyond products—she’s sparked conversations about sensuality, confidence, and self-care. 

Other Black Women Paving the Way in Sexual Health & Education

Here are some other Black women making waves in sexual health, advocacy, and education:

• Dr. Joycelyn Elders – The first Black U.S. Surgeon General who boldly advocated for comprehensive sex education.
• Dame Lola (Lola Jean) – Sex educator and coach, pushing for more inclusive and pleasure-centered education.
• Ericka Hart – A sexuality educator and breast cancer survivor breaking barriers in body awareness and advocacy.
• Dr. Hilda Hutcherson – Gynecologist, author, and professor focused on Black women’s sexual health and empowerment.
• Trinity of Coitus Culture – Serving as an intimacy coach, sex educator, and advocate is making an impact, too! My mission is to normalize conversations around sexual health and wellness, particularly for Black women. Through workshops, events, and digital content, I strive to make sexual education engaging, culturally relevant, and accessible. By providing these spaces, I help dismantle the stigma around sexual exploration and pleasure for Black women.

Why This Matters

Representation in sexual health and education matters. These women are changing the way Black women experience intimacy, pleasure, and wellness. Their work reminds us that sexual liberation and education are acts of self-love and empowerment.

Continuing the Legacy

Black women in sexual health have always been at the forefront of change, whether through advocacy, education, or innovation. My work stands on the shoulders of the women who came before me, and I am committed to pushing the conversation forward—because our pleasure, health, and liberation matter.
